Planning Your Next RV Trip With AI

AI tools like ChatGPT are quite polarizing. Some people love 'em, others may hate 'em. But it's important to remember that, at the end of the day, these tools are just fancy internet crawlers, spitting out information in a way the machine deems "conversational" (which it bases on hundreds of thousands of online interactions between actual humans).

Although this does cause trouble in certain areas (like serious news reporting), it makes AI super handy for collecting and sorting lots of info fast (stuff that would usually take tons of time and searching to put together).

With that in mind, we decided to run a little experiment and ask ChatGPT to plan our next RV trip. Below is the text of that conversation, as well as our analysis of ChatGPT’s answers:

OUR CONVERSATION WITH CHATGPT

RVi:

My first RV trip will be to Yellowstone. We'll be flat towing our Jeep Wrangler behind our motorhome. We want to stay for two weeks. What are some things we'll need for that kind of a trip, where would be the best place to stay, and what are some locations we should consider visiting?

ChatGPT:

A two-week RV trip to Yellowstone with a flat-towed Jeep Wrangler sounds like an incredible adventure! Here's a list of things you'll need for your trip, along with some suggestions for places to stay and must-visit locations:

Essentials for the Trip:

  • RV Essentials:
    • Leveling blocks
    • RV sewer hose and connectors
    • Freshwater hose
    • RV-friendly toilet paper
    • Electrical adapters (30/50 amp)
    • Surge protector
    • Basic toolkit
    • First aid kit
  • Jeep Essentials:
    • Spare tire and jack
    • Basic toolkit
    • Jumper cables
    • Tire pressure gauge
    • Tow strap or recovery gear
    • Emergency kit (flashlight, blanket, water, etc.)
  • Camping Gear:
    • Tent (for additional sleeping space if needed)
    • Sleeping bags and sleeping pads
    • Camping chairs
    • Portable grill or camping stove
    • Cooking utensils and supplies
    • Lantern or portable lights
  • Outdoor Gear:
    • Hiking boots
    • Binoculars
    • Daypacks
    • Bear spray (for hiking in bear country)
    • Fishing gear (if interested)

(RVi Analysis: These are all good suggestions for this kind of a trip! The only knock on this answer would be that it’s very generic - based on your specific lifestyle, some of the additional camping or outdoor gear may be unnecessary for your unique needs. Likewise, you may find that the RV essentials are a little sparse. That being said, this answer is clearly just covering the absolute basics, and, when thinking about it from that perspective, it’s definitely giving us good info. For all those reasons, we’d rate this answer a 7/10.)

Places to Stay:

  • Yellowstone National Park Campgrounds:
    • There are several campgrounds within Yellowstone, but they fill up quickly, so reservations are recommended. Some popular ones include Madison, Canyon, and Fishing Bridge RV Park.
  • Grand Teton National Park Campgrounds:
    • Just south of Yellowstone, Grand Teton offers beautiful camping options. Colter Bay RV Park and Gros Ventre Campground are popular choices.
  • Nearby RV Parks and Campgrounds:
    • There are numerous private RV parks and campgrounds in the surrounding areas, offering various amenities and hookups.

(RVi Analysis: The options here are excellent - and the guidance about the campgrounds within Yellowstone filling up quickly is spot on. The fact that it includes some specific alternates makes this easily an 8.5/10.)

Must-Visit Locations:

  • Old Faithful:
    • Witness the iconic geyser eruption and explore the surrounding thermal features.
  • Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone:
    • Marvel at the impressive waterfalls and scenic viewpoints along the canyon rim.
  • Grand Prismatic Spring:
    • Visit one of Yellowstone's most famous and colorful hot springs.
  • Mammoth Hot Springs:
    • Explore the terraces of travertine formations and enjoy wildlife viewing in the area.
  • Lamar Valley:
    • Known for its abundant wildlife, including bison, elk, wolves, and bears, Lamar Valley offers excellent opportunities for wildlife watching and photography.
  • Norris Geyser Basin:
    • Discover unique geothermal features, including steam vents, hot springs, and geysers.
  • Mount Washburn:
    • Hike to the summit for panoramic views of Yellowstone's diverse landscape.
  • Yellowstone Lake:
    • Enjoy boating, fishing, or simply relaxing along the shores of the largest high-elevation lake in North America.

Be sure to check the current road and weather conditions in Yellowstone before heading out on any excursions, and always practice Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the park's natural beauty for future generations. Have a fantastic trip!

(RVi Analysis: This is a fantastic checklist to start with if you’re heading to Yellowstone for the first time. There’s a great mix of easy hikes and more strenuous ones. Easily a 9/10.)

RVi:

Is there anything else we should know about Yellowstone before we take our trip there?

ChatGPT:

Absolutely! Here are a few more things to know before your trip to Yellowstone:

  • Wildlife Safety: Yellowstone is home to a variety of wildlife, including bears, bison, elk, and wolves. Keep a safe distance from all wildlife and never approach or feed them. Be especially cautious around bison, as they can be unpredictable and dangerous. Carry bear spray when hiking in bear country and familiarize yourself with proper wildlife viewing etiquette.
  • Weather Variability: Yellowstone's weather can be unpredictable, even in the summer months. Be prepared for sudden temperature changes, rain showers, and even snow at higher elevations. Dress in layers and pack clothing for a variety of conditions.
  • Altitude Considerations: Parts of Yellowstone are at high elevations, which can affect some individuals, particularly those who are not acclimated to altitude. Stay hydrated, take it easy during physical activities, and be aware of symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache, nausea, and dizziness.
  • Road Conditions: Some roads in Yellowstone may be subject to closures or restrictions due to weather, construction, or wildlife activity. Check the park's website or visitor centers for the latest road conditions and closures before heading out on your adventures.
  • Reservations and Permits: Campgrounds, lodges, and popular activities like backcountry camping and ranger-led tours may require reservations or permits in advance. Plan ahead and make reservations as early as possible, especially during peak season.
  • Park Regulations: Familiarize yourself with park regulations, including rules regarding camping, hiking, fishing, and off-road driving. Follow all posted signs and instructions from park rangers to help protect the park's natural resources and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
  • Cellular Service and Connectivity: Cell phone service and internet connectivity can be limited or non-existent in many areas of Yellowstone. Plan accordingly and consider downloading offline maps or guides before your trip. Additionally, inform someone outside the park of your itinerary and expected return time in case of emergencies.
  • Leave No Trace: Practice Leave No Trace principles during your visit to minimize your impact on the environment. Pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, and avoid disturbing wildlife or natural features.

By keeping these tips in mind and being prepared for the unique challenges and experiences that Yellowstone offers, you'll be well-equipped to enjoy your RV trip to one of America's most iconic national parks. Safe travels!

(RVi Analysis: We don’t really have any notes here. With National Parks like Yellowstone, Weather Variability and Altitude Considerations are critical to point out. However, all of these are extremely important things to remember whenever you travel to a location. 10/10.)

CONCLUSION

While it’s probably not realistic to plan every aspect of your trip using AI, tools like ChatGPT do provide an interesting and useful way to at least get started. You have a thousand and one things to think about, remember, and plan for when you’re heading out on a trip. After this experiment, we definitely think AI tools can help alleviate at least some of that stress.
