Getting an error on any product can be scary - but it’s especially scary when it comes to safety products like braking systems. Fortunately, when it comes to an RVi braking system, error codes are actually a best-case scenario when something does go wrong - an error code tells our team exactly what’s gone wrong and how to fix things, without having to make you go through a bunch of troubleshooting steps to figure that out.
If you’re ever seeing an error code, you’ll want to let our team know that information right away. And, if something goes wrong and you’re not sure what’s happening, pay close attention to any error codes that may pop up.
We’re going to cover these error codes in detail over the next couple of weeks, starting with RVibrake Shadow.
POSSIBLE ERROR CODES
Now, it’s important to note that not every potential issue is covered by an error code. So, there may be instances where more extensive troubleshooting may be necessary to diagnose the source of a problem. However, by and large, these error codes cover most things that could arise over the lifetime of an RVibrake Shadow:
ERROR CODE 01: This error means that the Shadow Box and Booster Box are not currently communicating with each other. Usually, this has to do with the 6-pin cable spanning the two parts of the system. It’s possible one end isn’t seated properly or that a female port on one of the boxes is no longer functional.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Start by unplugging both ends of the 6-pin cable, then firmly reinserting. See if the error code clears (you’ll likely need to exit Drive Mode, then go back into it to confirm this). If it doesn’t, the issue is likely with a port and you’ll want to reach out to our team to get that resolved.
ERROR CODE 02: A code 02 indicates that the accelerometer chip on the Shadow Box circuit board is not reporting data. This is essential for braking, so the Shadow will not brake if you see this error code.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? The best thing to do is to try and reset the Shadow Box. This is done similarly to how you would perform a reset of our Towed Battery Charger Plus: Remove both sides of the Shadow Box from the vehicle battery and hold the ring terminals together for a full 60 seconds. Make sure the umbilical between the vehicle and RV is disconnected during this time. After 60 seconds has elapsed, reattach to the battery and see if the code has cleared. If not, contact our team for additional troubleshooting.
ERROR CODE 03: This occurs when the pressure sensor for the VAC port on the Booster Box has failed or is reporting data that is wildly out of its normal range.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Try resetting the Shadow by following the steps detailed above under ‘Error Code 02’. If that reset fails to resolve things, reach out to our team.
ERROR CODE 04: Very similar to an Error Code 03, an Error Code 04 happens when the pressure sensor for the CYL port on the Booster Box has failed or is reporting data that is wildly out of its normal range.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Again, try that reset we detailed under the two previous codes. If the Error Code is still being thrown after leaving and re-entering the Drive Mode screen, contact our team.
ERROR CODE 07: This code has to do with a leak somewhere in the system. Usually, this is on a length of hose running from the Booster’s VAC port to the vacuum line tee. However, it can be elsewhere. A leak also takes different forms, depending on whether it’s a vacuum or pressure leak.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? If you ever see this code, you’ll want to troubleshoot it by following along with the video below. Once you’ve done so and you’ve identified the source of the leak, reach out to our team so we can provide you with any necessary replacement parts.
CONCLUSION
Error codes are never great - they mean something has gone wrong. Fortunately, though, they tell exactly what is going on so that we can quickly get you squared away and back on the road. Additionally, because RVibrake Shadow is one of the most reliable braking systems on the market, the vast majority of users will never see any of these issues.
